Based in Indianapolis, the Mystikos Quintet is out to show that there’s more coming out of Naptown than basketball and auto racing. This debut effort is a hook-laden, groove-centered homage to Jimmy Smith-era jazz/funk, Miles Davis’ muted trumpet and the funkier side of 1970s jazz fusion. Mystikos Quintet also conjures up plenty of rock ingredients to fill out their gourmet stew. All this against a backdrop of the quintet’s idiosyncratic take on familiar downtempo elements. Indeed, when it comes to the Mystikos Quintet, the fortunate listener will experience music that’s easy on the ears and soothing to the soul—yet deep enough to shake ya rump.
