Bio
STOL is a Copenhagen-based band inspired by the electronic postpunk and dark rock pioneers of the 80’s and beyond; notably Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Bauhaus and Joy Division.
STOL was formed in 2000 and they hold several discarded albums to their name. It wasn’t until 2006/7 that the band finally arrived on what they agreed was the right progressive path and started performing live.
The inaugural show was held at the notorious underground festival Neck Festival (Nakkefestival). Despite only a small local fan base, the show was hugely successful and the band decided to work on more material.
The two founders of STOL are musician and singer Michael Schoubye and lyricist Martin Ferro-Thomsen, both with backgrounds in disbanded rock and tech bands from the 90’s underground scene.
The creative process of STOL often starts with Martin’s writing, inspired largely by avant-garde literature and a decaying society, which is translated by Michael’s unique songwriting into a highly poetic and melodic universe.
In 2007 they were joined by Henrik Knudsen and Hans Landgreen, who adds unique value to the band, not least to the live act where Hans plays the electric guitar and Henrik runs the machinery, allowing Michael to perform the live vocals unrestrained.
The current profile and lineup of STOL has proven a perfect match and their sound is like a fresh breath of air in the contemporary music scene.
A proof of this is the bands upcoming live show, where STOL has been hired to open Einstürzende Neubauten’s show in Casa Da Musica, Porto (more details on our blog).
STOL’s MySpace profile already shows more than 17,000 profile views and with the Neubauten opening it seems evident that this band is ready to leave the sandbox for a budding international career.
